Hollywood Arrives in 2025 to Film the Werwulf Movie on Dartmoor
Robert Eggers, director of 2024’s Nosferatu has chosen to film his latest Werwulf movie on Dartmoor. His choice means Hollywood, or at least a little part of it, arrived for filming on Dartmoor earlier this autumn.
Touted to be the darkest and scariest horror he’s written so far, the frightening folklore-centred horror brings Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Lily-Rose Depp and Willem Dafoe to our favourite national park. Earlier this year, the film crew’s accommodation team stopped by Langstone Manor Park to have a look at our cottages and apartments.
Unfortunately, we’re a little too far from their filming locations and won’t be hosting some of Hollywood’s finest. That hasn’t stopped us from following the filming or learning more about the latest horror movie to choose Dartmoor for its location. Read on to get up to speed on the filming of the Werwulf movie on Dartmoor.

Where is Werwulf being filmed on Dartmoor?
Widecombe in the Moor and Postbridge are each hosting temporary movie sets. The land north of Sharp Tor, Assycombe Hill, and Fernworthy Forest will have temporary medieval-style
buildings and farmsteads erected near them. The sets, created solely for this movie, will be removed and the areas returned to the former condition within six months of the filming crew finishing.
Access to the public footpaths in the area is still allowed, although security staff may ask walkers to pause while cameras are in action. Similarly, traffic controls for the main roads in the area have been set up. These lights will hold traffic for ten minute periods when filming is live. This is to make sure headlight disturbance and people wearing modern clothing aren’t spotted in the background of the 13th century tale of terrified English villagers.
Mirage Pictures and Eggers’ creative team have been tight-lipped about details of the script. Only saying this is the scariest tale to be told by the director so far. It has been confirmed that Eggers’ muse, Willem Dafoe, Lilly-Rose Depp and Aaron Taylor-Johnson—the same actors from the 2024 Nosferatu blockbuster—are cast for this story too.
Filming is scheduled to last for eleven weeks, meaning it’s likely the cast and crew will spend some of Christmas and New Year in Devon. Release of the Werwulf movie on Dartmoor is set for December 2026.
Other films that used Dartmoor as their location
This isn’t the first time our unique moorland has been chosen as the backdrop for a scary movie. Dartmoor has been used for filming movies as far back as 1929. Escape from Dartmoor, a silent movie written by Anthony Asquith, was one of the first films to use our atmospheric location for its eerie narrative.
Many people think the pub from American Werewolf In London, The Slaughtered Lamb, is one of Dartmoor’s many pubs too. Sadly, this isn’t the case. The Slaughtered Lamb is a combination of two places; a cottage in Crickadern, Wales and the Black Swan in Ockham, Surrey.
Other movies to film on Dartmoor include Dartmoor Killing (a 2015 horror), Revolution starring Al Pacino and Donald Sutherland, and War Horse.
More recently, HBO chose Dartmoor’s Lustleigh village for the new Harry Potter TV series. Filming for the TV series is still happening and is expected to continue at until just before it’s premier in 2027.
