The Best Cycle Routes for Scenic Rides On and Around Dartmoor
Taking in the beauty of Dartmoor from the seat of a mountain bike is arguably one of the best ways to spend a holiday in the area. Dartmoor has multiple cycle routes that enable active holidaymakers to take in the breath-taking scenery while working up a “cyclist’s high” from a long ride. Here at Langstone Manor Park, we’re ideally situated for cyclists who wish to explore the many scenic routes and return to a little comfort and hospitality after an active day out on the trails.
Dartmoor Way Cycle Route
The Dartmoor Way Cycle Route is well marked. It takes in pretty villages, uses parts of the Tour de Manche trail and provides gorgeous views of Dartmoor’s famous granite Tors. Able to be completed in 6 hours, it’s recommended that cyclists take it a little slower so they can appreciate the beauty of the area. It’s best to take the circular trail in an anti-clockwise direction (travelling east from Tavistock) unless you’re keen for a bit more of a challenge! Road crossings are easier to navigate from this direction and the hills are a little more forgiving.
Two Moors Way
For the more adventurous and energetic, the Two Moors Way cycling experience takes in both Dartmoor and Exmoor. Covering 102 miles of cycle paths, back roads and country lanes, cyclists will travel through some of the UK’s most beautiful and wild countryside. Riders can expect to pass through tunnels, view Dartmoor’s rocky outcrops and coast along historic railway viaducts as they make their way from Plymouth to Ilfracombe. Although it is possible to plan and cycle this in your own time, Cycle Active offer a range of support packages that take care of transfers, baggage and other logistical details.
A Cycling Challenge Like No Other
Not for the faint of heart, the LEJOG challenge passes through Dartmoor from the southern end to the north. This trail takes cyclists from Land’s End to the northernmost point in the UK, John O’Groats. Using minor roads, riders experience some challenging steep hill climbs and magnificent views across the moors. A high level of fitness is needed to complete this journey in the allocated 20 days. As cyclists make their way north of Bristol, the terrain becomes a little easier to manage.
Cycling holidays on Dartmoor are an excellent way to combine exercise with sightseeing and boost your mood – no matter what the British summer decides to do! For those who like to enjoy more sedate holidays on Dartmoor, many off-road cycle paths are perfect for exploring without the long-term commitment of a dedicated cycling holiday. If you are interested in shorter day trips on Dartmoor, bikes can be hired from Tavistock Bike Hire.
